Sayaka Hayano, born in Kobe (Japan), trained at Kobe University. She went on to study at the Paris Conservatoire (CRR), and then at the Haute École des Arts du Rhin in Strasbourg. She is now the titular organist of the main organ at the Temple Neuf, Saint-Paul’s Church and Saint-Matthieu’s Church in Strasbourg. She teaches at the Centre d’Action Liturgique et Musicale (CALM) for the Diocese of Strasbourg. She performs regularly in concert, in France and Japan, both as a soloist and as an accompanist to vocal and instrumental ensembles.
The Merklin organ (1877) is a key instrument in the French symphonic tradition. Modified in 1954, it was completely rebuilt by Nicolas Toussaint (2003–2006) in accordance with the original design, and then overhauled in 2019 by Quentin Blumenroeder to stabilise and preserve its tonal balance.
