History and purpose

The International Society for Hymnological Studies (IAH) was founded in 1959, and in 1992 it became a registered voluntary association (e.V.) with headquarters in Heidelberg. It is an association that supports the cultivation of and research into the church’s song on an international, interconfessional, and interdisciplinary basis.

Membership profile

As of November 2017, the members of the IAH come from 32 countries. Due to the interdisciplinary focus of the IAH, various fields of study are represented, including theology, literature, linguistics, publishing history, and musicology.

Academic conferences

Academic conferences are held every two years, and every six years they are organized as joint conferences with the Hymn Society of Great Britain and Ireland and the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada.
